Curfew to remain effective in Bhakkar until restoration of peace

Curfew to remain effective in Bhakkar until restoration of peace: Chief Secretary Punjab

LAHORE: Chief Secretary Punjab Javed Aslam has said that curfew will remain effective in Bhakkar until the situation will return to normal following the Friday’s sectarian clashes that left 12 people dead.
He stated this while chairing a high-level meeting regarding prevailing law and situation in Bhakkar after the deadly sectarian clashes. The meeting was attended by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Punjab, Home Secretary, Secretary Auqaf, Secretary Information and other higher officials.
Javed Aslam said that no one will be allowed to violate the law, and that strict action will be initiated against the perpetrators involved in the sectarian clashes.
It may be mentioned that a strict indefinite curfew was imposed from 10:00 am onwards in Bhakkar and other restive districts on Saturday in order to ward off any further violence.
Police officials said the curfew will remain enforced until further orders in Bhakkar, Darya Khan, Kotla Jam, Panj Garaeen, and Kahawar Kalan as these districts are most vulnerable to violence.
The Executive District Officer (EDO) Education Qazi Zahoor Hussain said that all the institutes will remain closed in the areas under curfew.
District Police Officer, Sarfaraz Falki told a private news channel that additional contingents of police and Rangers have been deployed in the restive districts.

Restive Bhakkar, districts under strict indefinite curfew

BHAKKAR: In order to ward off any further violence, a strict indefinite curfew that started from 10:00AM has been clamped on Bhakkar and other restive districts on Saturday as the environment continues to remain hostile after sectarian clashes left 11 people dead on Friday, Geo News reported.
According to police officials, the curfew will remain enforced until further orders in Bhakkar, Darya Khan, Kotla Jam, Panj Garaeen, and Kahawar Kalan as these districts are most vulnerable to violence.
The Executive District Officer (EDO) Education Qazi Zahoor Hussain said that all the institutes will remain closed in the areas under curfew.
District Police Officer, Sarfaraz Falki told Geo News that additional contingents of police and Rangers have been deployed in the restive districts.
Earlier on Friday, the violence broke out when a protest march organized by Sunni radical group Ahl-e-Sunnat Waljamaat reached a Shia neighbourhood in the Bhakar district of central Punjab province.
Sources said the rally was going to Darya Khan from Bhakkar when some people opened fire on the participants at Kotla Jam. To which some of the armed rally participants retaliated.
As result, six people – from both the sects– were killed on the spot while six others were critically injured of whom five later succumbed to their wounds taking the total death toll to 11.
Sectarian violence between Pakistan's Sunni and Shia Muslim is rare in Punjab province, though other parts of the country are plagued by near-daily occurrences.
The Sunnis were protesting against the killing of one of their activists, DPO Sarfaraz Falki said.
"The tension started when participants of the protest rally reached a Shia-dominated area," he added.
"At least 11people have been killed from both sides, the situation is tense and we are deploying more police and Rangers (paramilitary troops)."
The two sides at first shouted slogans at each other, but men on both sides then opened fire, Falki said.
Mumtaz Hussain, a senior government official in the district, confirmed the death toll.

Rival groups clash claims eleven lives in Bhakkar

BHAKKAR (Dunya News) - At least eleven people were killed while seven others were injured in an armed clash between two religious groups in Kotla Jam on Friday.
The death toll increased after five people, who had initially been injured in the clashes, later succumbed to their wounds.
The clashes between Ahle Sunnat Waljamaat (ASWJ) members and the Shia s happened in the town of Bhakkar in Punjab province, police official Abdullah Khan said. People were killed on both sides, Khan said.
The conflict followed a protest rally held by ASWJ after one of their members was gunned down while closing his shop.
Heavy police contingent has reached the scene to control the situation. Rangers and additional contingent of police have also been called to bring the situation under control.
Punjab government has taken the notice of the incident and sought a report from the district administration.
Pakistan has experienced worsening sectarian violence in recent years, especially attacks by radical Sunnis targeting Shia s.
Also on Friday, gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire outside a Sunni seminary on the outskirts of the capital, Islamabad, killing two people and wounding a third.

ISLAMABAD: The ruling Pakistan Muslim-N (PML-N) has so far appeared to have maintained its position while Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has gained and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on the other hand lost public mandate in the largest by-elections of the country, according to unofficial results.
Unofficial results have started to pour in following Thursday’s by-polls on 41 national and provincial assembly slots.

PML-N is also leading with 14 provincial assembly seats – 11 in Punjab Assembly and 2 in Balochistan Assembly. PPP has so far bagged 3 provincial assembly slots – 2 in Punjab Assembly and 1 in Sindh Assembly. PTI has secured 2 Punjab Assembly seats and MQM 2 slots in Sindh Assembly while ANP has won 1 seat in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly.
By and large, the by-elections were conducted in a peaceful and smooth manner. At the eleventh hour, polling was postponed in Tank, due to security reasons.

Flood news

LAHORE: Over five hundred villages were inundated in Multan, Jhang and Kamoke on Sunday as floods started threatening more regions in Punjab.
According to the flood forecasting centre, India has released another 114,000 cusecs of water into the Sutlej and the peak is expected to reach Ganda Singhwala on Monday. It is likely to cause medium flood.
Flood in the Indus, Chenab, Ravi and tributaries of the latter two continued to affect life, property and crops over a vast area in Sialkot Division.
Raging waters of the Indus in Sindh’s riverine areas have forced people to shift to safe places after leaving their crops and homes at the mercy of the river.
The floodwater from Nullah Dek entered Kamoke after playing havoc in Narowal, Pasrur and Gujranwala, inundating 100 villages.
The water level in the Chenab at Jhang was rising, affecting 300 villages and damaging crops and structures.
According to an official of the Meteorological Department, any further strong monsoon system can generate massive river and urban flooding because almost all dams in Pakistan and India have filled to their capacity.
The official told Dawn that the land in Punjab was saturated because of the current six-day rain spell. “This means more rainwater would flow over the soil causing urban flooding. Let’s pray there is no stronger monsoon system,” he said.
On Saturday, the water level in Tarbela was 1,549feet, against its maximum conservation level of 1,550ft, and that in Mangla was 1,224.65feet, against its maximum level of 1,242 feet.
The authorities opened the spillways of the Rawal Dam to release its water and create room for absorbing more inflows.
On Sunday, four more people died as rain continued to lash various areas of Lahore. As many people died in Kasur.
Lahore again received heavy rain as a monsoon low over Rajasthan re-curved towards Indian Punjab and Haryana. Low temperature and close proximity to mountains covering the upper catchments of the Chenab, Ravi and Sutlej converted its moisture into rain. This is likely to persist for another two days.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who was in Lahore on Sunday, asked his brother Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif to step up efforts to cope with floods and rain.
He asked the national disaster management chief to rush to Chitral in order to oversee relief work after rains there.
Riaz Khan, the Flood Forecasting Division’s chief, said the Chenab at Trimmu was rising and was likely to be in medium flood on Monday.
A fresh peak of 123,000 cusecs was crossing the river at Akhnor, in India-held Jammu and is likely to enter Pakistan through Marala. The river will be in low flood.
INDUS: The Indus was rising at Guddu, where the discharge was 400,000 cusecs. It is expected to rise to a high flood level of 500,000 to 550,000 cusecs.
The level in the Ravi at Jassar, the entry point to Pakistan, was 48,000 cusecs and expected to rise to 70,000 cusecs low flood because of Sunday’s rain.
The river was in medium flood of 75,000 cusecs at Shahdara and expected to fall to 60,000 cusecs in 24 hours.
RAIN IN LAHORE: Rain in Lahore for the sixth day running dampened spirits, keeping people indoors and worried about the safety of their lives and property.
The rain was heavy on the city’s outskirts.
Seven-year-old Salman and his brother Salim, five, were killed when the roof of their house collapsed near Bedian Road. Their sister’s wedding was being held on Sunday.
Shahid, 25, of Shalimar, died when the wall of his under-construction house fell on him. His brother, Safdar, was critically injured.
A railway employee, Ghulam Murtaza, was electrocuted in Misri Shah when he touched a pylon.
The Met office reported that Lahore airport received 64mm of rain, Lahore city 30, Rawalakot 19, Murree 10, Balakot eight, Gujranwala six 6 and Kakul 5mm.
It said the weakened monsoon system was likely to generate fairly widespread thundershowers with isolated heavy falls in Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Sargodha, Lahore, Faisalabad, Sahiwal, Bahawalpur, Peshawar, Kohat, Hazara, Mardan, Islamabad and Kashmir.
