Ashes finale ends in thrilling draw

LONDON: England and Australia drew the fifth Test as the Ashes series ended in a dramatic draw on the final day at The Oval on Sunday.

England, set a target of 227 to win after Australia captain Michael Clarke's bold declaration, needed 21 more to win off 24 balls with five wickets left when the umpires decided the light, even with the floodlights on, was too dark to continue and ended the match at 7.35 pm local time.

The draw meant England, who'd already retained the Ashes, finished the five-match contest as 3-0 winners having triumphed in three successive Test series against Australia for the first time since the 1950s.

Pakistan will take on their toughest opponent of group, Malaysia in the second group on Sunday.

In 2009 Pakistan was the runners up of the tournament, when they lost to Korea at Kuanta, Malaysia.

Pakistan wasn’t able to qualify for the World cup after getting seventh position in World Hockey League.

Asia Cup is a must win situation for Pakistan to qualify for the World Cup otherwise it would be the first time in Pakistan 64 years hockey history that it will be out of the mega event.

Rain hits Australia's victory hopes

LONDON: Australia's hopes of forcing a consolation win in their Ashes finale against England were left hanging by a thread after rain washed out the whole of the fourth day's play at The Oval on Saturday.
Conditions worsened throughout the day and, with rain pelting down under increasingly dark skies, the umpires finally abandoned play for the day at 4.06pm local time (1506GMT) with only a handful of hardy spectators, some sheltering under umbrellas, still in the ground.
The bad weather was especially frustrating for Australia, who were seeking a first win in nine Tests and trying to avoid their first Ashes series without a Test victory since 1977.
England, who at 3-0 up had already won the five-match series and retained the Ashes, were 246 for four at stumps on the third day in reply to Australia's first innings 492 for nine declared,
That left England 245 runs behind and still requiring a further 46 runs to avoid the follow-on.
Ian Bell, who came into this match having scored exactly 500 runs in the series with three hundreds, was 29 not out and Test debutant Chris Woakes unbeaten on 15.
The way England batted on Friday, scoring at barely two runs per an over, suggested they were in no mood to give arch-rivals Australia a sniff of victory.
Australia now face the improbable task of having to take 16 wickets for victory on Sunday's final day -- if the weather allows.

However, England did take nine Australia wickets in under a session as they won the fourth Test in Durham by 74 runs with more than a day to spare.

Shehzad's record

Ahmad Shehzad established several records on way to plundering Zimbabwe for an unbeaten 98, which sealed a 2-0 sweep of the Twenty20 series for Pakistan. Shehzad bettered his best T20 international innings of 70, achieved in the previous game, to make the highest score in the format by a Pakistan batsman, going past Misbah-ul-Haq's 87* against Bangladesh in Karachi in 2008. Heaving the ball repeatedly over the leg-side boundary to become the first from his country to hit six sixes in a T20 innings, Shehzad added 143 for the second wicket with Mohammad Hafeez, making it the highest T20 partnership by a Pakistan pair. The previous best was 142 for the first wicket between Kamran Akmal and Salman Butt against Bangladesh at Gros Islet in the 2010 World Twenty20.
Shehzad said,
"It's important to be consistent I think so I've been trying very hard to achieve that and it's paid off, In the first six overs I didn't get much strike and I could easily have had a panic attack, but as soon as the captain came in that changed."

Pakistan clean sweeps Zimbabwe by 2-0 in T20s

HARARE: Pakistan have beaten Zimbabwe in the second Twenty20 by 19 runs on Saturday played at Harare Sports Club.
Zimbabwe after winning the toss preferred to have another chase after the earlier one came up 25 runs short against the visitors' versatile attack.
Pakistan has won the thirteenth bilateral Twenty20 series win, which is the most series win by any team followed by South Africa with 12 wins.

Pakistan wins by 25 Runs (Pak Vs. Zim)

Harare: Opener Ahmed Shehzad struck 70 from 50 deliveries to help Pakistan make a 25-run victory over Zimbabwe in the first Twenty20 international played at the Harare Sports Club.

Pakistan posted 161 for five from their 20 overs, a total that always looked beyond the hosts.

None of the Zimbabwe batsmen were able to score quickly with only skipper Brendan Taylor (32*) and Vusi Sibanda (31) compiling scores of note in the home total of 135 for five.

Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi used all his guile to bamboozle the Zimbabwe batsmen and his wrist spin brought match-winning figures of three for 25 in four overs.
Shehzad, was named the man of the match for his quick fire knock. He commented that the ball came on a little easier as the game got on and the green shirts were looking to lay a good foundation because it knew it had a big hitter like Afridi in the line-up.

Shehzad added that they were confident with the bowling line-up that they had, anything above the score of 150 would have given the edge to the tourists.

Earlier, Zimbabwe won the toss and elected to field, making a good start after opening the bowling with off-spinner Prosper Utseya conceding only 15 from his four overs.

But all the while Shehzad was blazing away from one end and when he was joined by Afridi (23 from 16 balls) with a little more than five overs to go, Pakistan stepped up the scoring rate. There was also a good cameo from debutant Sohaib Maqsood (26 from 16 balls).

All of the Pakistan bowlers were able to contain the batsmen in the Zimbabwe reply, with Afridi in particular using his variations to great effect on a dry, lifeless pitch.
Pakistan captain Mohammad Hafeez was happy with the win but wanted his side to remain focused for the challenges ahead.

The second Twenty20 will be played at the same venue on Saturday.

Pakistan U23 into final against India in Emerging Teams Cup

Singapore: Captain Hammad Azam led from the front to help Pakistan U23 overcome Sri Lanka U23 in a thrilling one-wicket win in the ACC Emerging Teams Cup semi-final in Singapore, confirming a place in the final against India U23 tomorrow.

Hammad scored an unbeaten half-century to take his side from tatters as they achieved the 231-run target.

The run-chase was shaky right from the beginning with in-form opening batsman Babar Azam getting out on a golden duck. None of the other top-order batsmen succeeded in earning a major contribution with Azeem Gumman (22) and Usman Salahuddin (31) being the top scorers from the lot.

Pakistan were struggling at 129 for seven in the 32nd over before the captain began the rescue mission. He played aggressively, scoring 66 off 69, aided with two boundaries and three sixes, to steer Pakistan to the target in the penultimate over with Sri Lanka U23 just a wicket away from victory.

Hammad’s efforts could not have yielded the desirable result without a valuable knock by Bilalwal Bhatti, who chipped in with 25 runs while batting at ninth position.
